Land Rover Series 1 88" 3.5 V8 Restoration
A rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally restored and very desirable 1958 Land Rover Series 1 88".
This vehicle has been restored with some very nice modifications to make the vehicle much more practical and useable. One of the best V8 conversions we have seen.
Please see a list below of all works carried out.
Chassis stripped and using parts from a donor chassis, and from the Radford brothers of Aberdeen, professionally rebuilt to exacting standards, shot blasted and powder coated and the hollow sections sprayed internally with Dinitrol.
The bulkhead is the original item that has been rebuilt by a professional series 1 restorer in the Land Rover series 1 club.
The engine, from an early Sd1, has been completely rebuilt. The crankshaft main bearings are -0.20” and the big ends are -0.1”, the bores were honed and the pistons are standard size with new rings, new ERR 5924 camshaft, new core plugs, heads overhauled. This includes a 'fast road' camshaft. The vehicle has been setup on a dyno and so the engine runs very well.
Gearbox is original and was completely dismantled, any parts needing replacement were replaced and meticulously rebuilt together with the transfer box, front output shaft, handbrake assembly and the overdrive.
New front and rear propshafts and rebuilt Range Rover 3.54:1 diffs
New wiring loom
New Rocky Mountain parabolic springs and bushes together with Pro Comp shock absorbers.
Both SU carbs were refurbished, new aluminium cored radiator with thermo activated cooling fan, new hoses. Fitted with Rover coolant header tank. New Lumenition electronic ignition, hi torque starter motor..
Complete braking system replaced and filled with silicon brake fluid.
All the cappings re-galvanised and refitted with the correct rivets, the body has been resprayed, the seats are good as is the cab and instruments, there is a new high quality tilt and fume curtain.
The wheels fitted are very rare and sort after wide dish which suit the vehicle very well. Fitted with 7.50 x 16 Michelin XZL tyres with plenty of life left in them.
Steering relay internals all renewed. The vehicle has been rewired with a Autosparks wiring loom and there is a rare Roto-Flare spot light fitted to the front, the reflector of which can be swivelled from a handle in the cab. New side, rear and indicator lights.
The fuel tank has been replaced recently. There is an electric fuel pump.
Twin bench seats in the rear, so seating for 7.
The vehicle was inspected and valued by a known classic car valuer, the full report is in the history file.
To quote some of the report 'This lovely V8-powered Series One has recently been rebuilt from the bare chassis to a very good standard by its enthusiast owner. The level of workmanship and level of finish is excellent and there is good attention to detail throughout.
The vehicle has clearly been stripped down exhaustively and even the galvanised body mappings have been removed, re-galvansied, and refitted. The engine swap combined with higher-ratio differentials and overdrive make this a decent road-going example, capable of keeping up with traffic, while the parabolic springs make its ride and handling safer.
Not only extremely presentable, the Land Rover is also well 'set up' and drives exceptionally well with a wonderful exhaust note. On the outside it appears very standard and can quite deservedly be called a 'wolf in sheep's clothing'.
Some of the excellent upgrades include, overdrive, free wheeling hubs, higher ratio Range Rover diffs, heated windscreen, the heater actually gets hot now its plumbed into a V8. All these items make the vehicle a joy to drive and much more useable.
UNDER THE BONNET
The engine bay has been well detailed and finished to a high standard. There are no oil leaks or corrosion visible. The engine has good oil pressure and sounds great.
ON THE ROAD
The engine busts into life at the turn of the key. It always starts first time and is a great runner. The vehicle really does pull very well and is a joy to drive and ready to use and enjoy this summer.
With the canvas sides rolled up and the door tops off this vehicle really does draw some attention. Especially when you put the windscreen down it really is an experience to drive.
The vehicle will be supplied with a full 12 month MOT. The gears change up and down as they should and goes through all the gears as it should.
Almost all Series Land Rovers we have had drip a little oil, some quite a lot, this is the exception though no drips of oil to speak of even after standing for days in the same place.
SUMMARY
This is a fantastic example of a Series 1 restoration which is ready to use and enjoy this summer. The chassis numbers on the plates are the same as on the log book registration document and that stamped on the chassis itself.
This Land Rover has obviously been cared for and cherished by its previous owners. It is a fantastic example that requires no work and is ready to use and enjoy. It would cost a lot more to build or commission a company to build a Series 1 like this with this conversion.
This a very honest 62 year old Series Land Rover. What you see is what you get it looks and drives exactly as it should. You will have to go a long way to find a better vehicle. We highly recommend viewing and a test drive to see just how well this vehicle looks and preforms.
