Land Rover 90 Defender County Station Wagon Carawagon

1 Owner from New

Rare opportunity to acquire one of the best and highly desirable early Land Rover 90 Carawagon.

Just 83,000 miles from new. Supplied new by Carawagon Ltd, London. The vehicle comes complete with all the Carawagon paperwork, including letters, invoices and sales brochures. The vehicle also has the original owners manual book pack.

The vehicle was first ordered 19th February 1985, Carawagon were expecting to take delivery of the vehicle in August 1985. The vehicle was then completed in February 1986, the vehicle was then first registered 12th February 1986 to the first and only keeper Mr C. Jackman. The vehicle then came into our care, having been dry stored and off the road for a number of years. We did some light recommissioning to bring the vehicle back to a good standard.

Carawagons are Land Rover based camper conversions manufactured by R.J. Searle Ltd. of Sunbury on Thames England. This company is no longer in business. There was a Carawagon conversion for each model of Land Rover and for the two door Range Rover. Combined, there were more Land Rover based Carawagons built than any other caravan conversion. Most Carawagons were built to order. This means that only group orders are likely to be identical. This particular vehicle is a Safari model.

There is original mot’s, servicing and invoices dating back to when the vehicle was new.

The chassis and bulkhead have never been welded or repaired in any way. It is remarkable. The vehicle still even retains a majority of its original paint.

Unique in such original condition and we think this is one of the lowest mileage best original un-restored 1986 examples available.

Retaining all of its original panels.

A very rare find indeed and one unlikely ever to be repeated - truly remarkable!

BODYWORK

When we acquired C650 DHV with the exception of a light buff particularly to the plastic arches the bodywork was left well alone. Finished in Venetian Red the vehicle looks fabulous with alpine white wheels.

It has benefited from a light polish and wax on all panels.

The wheels and roof are finished in Alpine white, which is factory correct for a 1986 Land Rover in Venetian Red.

The original county decals are in good condition.

The bulkhead is exceptionally solid and original, in fact as good as we have ever seen. With no repairs in sight or any that are required.

It retains it's original rear cross member which has never been welded. The underside has not been covered in under seal but preserved in new clean oil, you can still see the factory overspray under the wings and rear body this is exactly how they left the factory. No welding is required anywhere on this vehicle and it is ready to be enjoyed.

Originally from new C650 DHV had a spare wheel fitted to the rear door hence it never having a wheel mounted on the bonnet or in the back.

The hardtop roof is in excellent condition and has no dents or scratches and is still in it's original paint where you are able to see the original spot welds through the paint. The windows are also all original and stamped with the registration number.

The vehicle still retains all it’s original Lucas headlights, CEP & LEP lenses for indicators, side lights and brake lights which is nice to see as these items are now obsolete.

INTERIOR

The original factory fitted front seats are in good condition, they have never been replaced and are the originals to the vehicle these are of much better quality than replacements that are now available. Carawagon finished the rear seats in the same material which was supplied to them under license from Land Rover.

Door cards to the front doors are original factory items and are complete and in great condition. Sun visors that are perfect and a perfect headlining and side panels.

The dash is unmarked with no cracks or sun damage.

The vehicle is still fitted with the original period gas cooker, gas cylinders, all purpose table. All these extras are mentioned on the original invoice.

All windows open, all the window runners and rubbers are good and because the vehicle has been kept under cover not rusted away as so often is the case.

The load area is exceptionally clean and doesn't show any sights of heavy use. There is no corrosion at all.

UNDER THE BONNET

One of the best original engine bays we have seen on a 90, extremely clean with original stickers still in place. The 2.5 litre diesel naturally aspirated engine runs well. The injectors have recently been tested and the injection pump refurbished.

ON THE ROAD

The factory fitted engine busts into life on the turn of the key. It is apparent that this is a vehicle that has been maintained and covered low mileage it runs as quiet and smooth as any Series Land Rover that we have ever had.

A joy to drive and such fun, the vehicle will be supplied with a 12-month MOT with no advisories. Four wheel drive and low range and diff lock engage, as they should. The gears change up and down as they should it has a very quite gearbox which is a good sign of it's light use over the years.

The steering is as it should be and the vehicle doesn't wonder on the road like some series vehicles do. The vehicle has power steering which was a £287.00 extra in 1986.

SUMMARY

C650 DHV is an unmolested and original Factory Land Rover 90 County in immaculate original condition. All the numbers match - the chassis numbers on the plates are the same as on the log book registration document and that stamped on the chassis itself. The engine number also matches that recorded on the logbook.

This is one of the best low mileage and original untouched 90's we have ever had the opportunity to own.

This Land Rover has obviously been cared for and cherished by its previous owners.

It is very solid example that requires no work and is ready to use and enjoy.

It retains its original chassis, still displays the V.I.N clearly stamped on it by the factory.

If you are an investor you will already known the growing importance of original un-messed with condition for classic cars. If you are an enthusiast then you will not be disappointed with this vehicle as it is perfect in almost ever detail and is exactly as it left the factory 35 years ago.

This is a very honest 35-year-old Land Rover.

VALUE

Low mileage, history, condition, and originality will contribute greatly to the value of any classic. Anybody can restore a Land Rover to a certain standard however you can't make anymore-original low mileage vehicles and so for that reason these vehicles are becoming increasingly harder to find and so any opportunity to buy one shouldn't be missed.
