Land Rover Series 3 Lightweight Soft Top Military 1983
Very Original Condition, 12 volt vehicle, 2.25 petrol model.
A rare opportunity to acquire an exceptional example of a very desirable Land Rover Series 3 Lightweight Soft Top.
Despatched 19th September 1983 to Central Army Vehicle Depot, Hilton, Derbyshire. Miltary registration number 57 KB 33, truck utility 1/2 Tonne 4x4 Rover Series 3.
The vehicle was then received by Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1984. On 15th January 1986 it went to 3 Queens 3rd Battalion, The Queen's Regiment (Royal Sussex). On 25th January 1988 it went to 1 RRF which is Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. The vehicle then went to Aston Down 14th January 1998.
First registered for road use 13th April 1999, when it was demobbed.
There are lots of invoices for work done to the vehicle over the last 15 years, also previous mots. The history file is extensive with letters to the Royal Logistic Corps Museum, B vehicle record and lots of servicing records.
BODYWORK
The body is overall in great shape and all the panels are remarkably straight considering it is an ex military vehicle. The vehicle has recently benefited from a new Khaki Hood.
The rear tub unlike most Land Rovers is remarkably straight in the back and doesn't show any signs of hard use and is fitted with two bench seats, all in matching grey.
The bulkhead is exceptionally solid and even has it's original pressed footwells which are both in remarkable condition and require no attention.
The chassis is in exceptionally good condition, and has had no previous repairs. No further work is required.
This vehicle has always had a spare wheel fitted on the bonnet it is in good condition and secured correctly with the straps. There is camouflage netting on the wheel and also more netting in the back to put over the vehicle at shows.
The tyres are all in good condition with plenty of tread. The vehicle is also fitted with the correct military shovel and pickaxe.
INTERIOR
The vehicle has the original smiths square heater mounted to the centre of the bulkhead with demisters for the windscreen.
The load area is exceptionally clean and doesn't show any sights of heavy use. A heavy duty rear mat has been fitted, underneath the floor is in good condition.
UNDER THE BONNET
The engine bay has been left completely standard, including the original 2.25 petrol engine, 12 volt system the engine runs very well. It is the correct later 5 bearing crank engine. It really does drive with plenty of power and will happily sit at 60mph without any problem. The vehicle is fitted with a earlier Solex carb which has been fully restored so although not the correct period it really does run very well with it and so we have left it in place.
ON THE ROAD
The engine busts into life on the turn of the key. It always starts first time and is a great runner. The vehicle really does pull very well and is a joy to drive. The is no play in the drivetrain and it drives very well.
The vehicle will be supplied with a 12 month MOT with no advisories.
The gears change up and down as they should the main box and transfer box both function correctly.
Almost all Series Land Rovers we have had drip a little oil, some quite a lot, this is the exception though no drips of oil to speak of even after standing for days in the same place.
SUMMARY
This is a fantastic example of a Series 3 lightweight and there aren't many around in such original and great condition. All the numbers match - the chassis numbers on the plates are the same as on the log book registration document and that stamped on the chassis itself.
This is one of the most original and clean examples of a lightweight we have had. This Land Rover has obviously been cared for and cherished by its previous owners. It is a fantastic example that requires no work and is ready to use and enjoy.
