Land Rover Series 1 80" Lights Through the Grille Restoration 1950

On offer is a nice example of a Series 1 80"

First Registered 21st June 1950. The vehicle till has its original gearbox and running gear although it as a later 2 litre engine still from the same 80" model, this does give the car more power and improves drivability. The vehicle comes complete with its original number plate GAV 248 and also still has the original buff log book.

GAV 248 was subject to a comprehensive restoration between July 2015 and August 2016 and has covered about 100 miles since then. As well as being particularly fastidious about the quality of the restoration, the owner obviously felt the same way about the paperwork as the car is supplied with a spreadsheet listing every item of expenditure down to the last penny and, in this case, it runs to 103 separate entries totalling £35,928.16. There is no point in listing selected items here as every last nut, bolt and grommet is detailed on the sheet and combined with a full set of receipts and detailed photographs of the restoration, it's difficult not to be genuinely impressed with the effort that's gone into returning this 'lights through the grille' Series 1 to the condition its in today.

Here is the link to pictures of the vehicle before and during its restoration.

The vehicle benefits from two wiper motors and a Smiths Circular Heater.

The rear tub unlike most Land Rovers is remarkably straight in the back and doesn't show any signs of hard use, rear bench seats can be fitted should the buyer wish.

Most original components have been reconditioned. When some parts were found to be beyond repair, original Land Rover new-old stock components were used.

UNDER THE BONNET

The engine bay has been extremely well detailed and finished to the highest of standards. The restoration includes a more modern coil to improve reliability. The engine runs very well and is apparent the vehicle has not covered many miles. Thousands of pounds have been spent on this vehicle, to ensure original parts have been used.

The vehicle has recently been serviced and is now ready to use and enjoy this Summer.

ON THE ROAD

The engine busts into life on the turn of the key. It always starts first time and is a great runner. The vehicle really does pull very well and is a joy to drive.

With the canvas sides rolled up and the door tops off this vehicle really does draw some attention.

The vehicle has a 12 month MOT with no advisories. It has a permanent four wheel drive gearbox the same as the early ring pull time but the very early yellow knob model which only used to engage 4 wheel drive in reverse.

The gears change up and down as they should the main box was checked over by a specialist and necessary parts replaced.

Almost all Series Land Rovers we have had drip a little oil, some quite a lot, this is the exception though no drips of oil to speak of even after standing for days in the same place.

SUMMARY

This is an fantastic example of a Series 1 restoration.

This is one of the best value for money 1950 80" we have ever had the opportunity to offer. This Land Rover has obviously been cared for and cherished by its previous owners. It is a fantastic example that requires no work and is ready to use and enjoy. The last owner had the vehicle for 8 years and no expense has been spared.

If you are an investor then you will already know how these vehicles have appreciated over the last 5 years some doubling in value.

This a very honest 73 year old Series Land Rover. What you see is what you get it looks and drives exactly as it should. You will have to go a long way to find a better vehicle. What better way to celebrate this years 75th anniversary than with a Series 1.

All in all, a lovely example of a 1950 Land Rover and we think it is really good value for money.
