Land Rover Series 1 86" Nut & Bolt Restoration

A rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally restored and very desirable 1955 Land Rover Series 1 86".

Subject to a full nut and bolt restoration which has been done in house. The whole restoration has been documented with a spreadsheet showing costs and photographs of every stage during the restoration.

Inspired by the US Army's wartime 'Jeep', developed in haste and intended for short-term, small-scale production, the Land Rover would defy its creators' initial skepticism. Rover bosses, the Wilks brothers saw the need for a tough, four-wheel-drive utility vehicle to serve the needs of the agricultural community in the immediate post-war years, but the Land Rover's runaway success took the company by surprise. Continuously developed over the course of more than 60 years in production, the supremely versatile Land Rover has proved itself adaptable to innumerable civilian and military roles. It was a sad day for 4x4 enthusiasts when the last Defender model rolled off the Solihull production line in January 2016; the Land Rover's successor is keenly anticipated.

This Series I example has been subject to a full nut and bolt restoration which has been done in house over a 12 month period. We have used many of the same suppliers for the restoration as the manufacturer's own 'Land Rover Reborn' project. Ensuring we used as many original parts that came off the vehicle were possible. When replacement parts were required new old stock items were sourced and fitted. To try to keep the vehicle as original as possible. The restoration included using the correct sheardised nuts and bolts. The vehicle is fitted with period correct Avon Traction Mileage tyres.

Immaculately presented and to original specification, the engine has been extensively rebuilt using genuine parts. The transmission likewise has been fully reconditioned. Bodywork is mostly original, with some reproduction panels used where required. The body was re-sprayed in deep bronze green by a master craftsman, while the interior received new seats, controls, and paintwork. The body cappings, windscreen frame and other steel components were all sand blasted and re galvanised. A new original-specification braided wiring loom has been installed. Quite possibly the highest-quality Land Rover restoration outside of the 'Reborn' project.

The restoration includes the correct single rear window canvas which is correct for a 1955 model, the correct dome headed rivets were used, to ensure this vehicle was restored as close to factory specifications as possible. Additional extras include free wheeling hubs.

Almost all Series Land Rovers we have had drip a little oil, some quite a lot, this is the exception though no drips of oil to speak of even after standing for days in the same place.

The steering is as it should be and the vehicle doesn't wonder on the road like some series vehicles do. The vehicle is fitted with the later Series 1 style steering box which is a far better design and a common modification that took place.

The vehicle will be supplied with a full 12 months mot, despite the vehicle being mot and tax exempt.

This is one of the best restored 1955 86" we have ever had the opportunity to own. This Land Rover has obviously been cared for and cherished by its previous owners. It is a fantastic example that requires no work and is ready to use and enjoy.
